We will help you make an informed treatment choice by using guidelines from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Hanna may require a patient to take part in a sleep study done by a physician to give a diagnosis.

Diagnosis
Many times, sleep apnea can go undiagnosed. A person experiencing the condition will be sleeping when symptoms arise, and doctors have been unable to positively diagnose sleep apnea during routine visits. Typical symptoms include choking sounds and pauses in breathing during sleep.
If you think you might have sleep apnea, a doctor can check for secondary symptoms, including swollen or inflamed airway soft tissues. The doctor might be interested in your family history because that can serve as a strong indicator of the condition. Patients are also very likely to experience fatigue during the daytime due to the poor quality of sleep.
An overnight sleep study conducted by professionals through a polysomnogram (PSG), measured multiple factors, including brain function, eye movement, heart rhythm, and respiratory airflow. If you have clinically significant sleep apnea, you will demonstrate blood oxygen desaturation of 3-4% or more or apneas of at least 10 seconds at a rate of five episodes or more per hour.
Airway Orthotic
A custom made Airway Orthotic (oral appliance) can provide relief by advancing the jaw during sleep. This expands the airway and prevents the tongue from falling back and blocking the airway. There are a number of custom-fitted orthotics that can be made by a dentist trained in sleep apnea.

"Dr. Hanna has kept our teeth healthy for over 30 years. My grown children will never switch from Dr. Hanna and my sons-in-law are now his patients. My 85-year old mother needed teeth pulled, and he treated her with great compassion. We are big Dr. Hanna fans."
